I guess what you are asking could be for any mobile phone. Taking a photo with the front camera would get the stealers face (I haven't got an iPhone, I am assuming it has two cameras, one for video calls like all new phones have).
If you report the EMEI number (kinda its serial)of the phone it's at least blocked by all networks and no-one else can ever use it again, no matter what Sim/hack they do (thats in my country, maybe it's yours as well). You don't get you phone back but at least you know no-one can use it or sell it as it is now worthless - makes stealing phones not worth it anymore.

With some Nokia phones you can send a code to it and all personal info is wiped out, which is a good idea as well.
